Discovering the World of Managing Cattle and Producing Beef!

The Beef Course builds on all the materials from Ag 101, Sustainability and Focus on Livestock drawing in on the details of cattle beef production. We show various operations and our experts discuss various pieces that are not easily seen until you enter the beef industry. Completing the course results in a depth of understanding and critical thinking that will come in handy working with customers and colleagues. 

This course includes video & printed materials to accompany lessons on:

  • BEEF FACTS & TRIVIA – Interesting facts about beef including on the food and farm/ranch sides of the commodity. 
  • THE BEEF PRODUCTION CALENDAR– A visual look at the various points of the season including calving, feed production and more. 
  • AN OVERVIEW OF BEEF Ryan Goodman, manager beef cattle research at Washington State Univ. has worked on farms, ranches, feedlots and beef marketing programs. He provides an overview of the industry. 
  • COW-CALF PRODUCTION – Cattle rancher Debbie Lyons-Blythe provides insight on the places beef usually starts, family-operated cow-calf operations. 
  • FEEDLOT PRODUCTION – Farmer Derek Klingenberg shows us around his family’s feedlot sharing lessons on feed, movement, etc.
  • CONNECTING FARMS TO THE MARKET – Farmer David Price and Butcher Bob Komametsky provide insight into the connections in the market going farm to butcher and retail markets. 
  • BEEF ORGANIZATIONS, MEDIA & EVENTS – This lesson provides a range of resources that are useful in the beef industry.
